Tragic Incidents Involving Water Beads

Did Your Child Suffer Injury From a Chuckle & Roar Water Bead?

After almost 250 reports to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System of injury or death of young children caused by water beads, Buffalo Games has finally issued a recall of its dangerous Chuckle & Roar brand water bead toy.

Feldman Shepherd represents numerous families whose children have been seriously injured or died as a result of defective and dangerous children's products, including the family of a little girl who sustained fatal injuries after ingesting water beads.

The Danger of Water Beads

Marketed as a developmental toy, water beads are colorful and tiny. They are sold in packs of hundreds or thousands. To a child's amazement, they can expand to 200 times their size when soaked in water.

While the packaging includes a choking hazard warning, that is not the real danger. Water beads can swell if they are swallowed by a young child which can result in a potentially deadly gastrointestinal or bowel obstruction. Children can also be injured by the swelling beads if they insert them in their nose or ears.

According to product liability attorney Daniel J. Mann, "It is critical for manufacturers of children’s toys to ensure that their products are safe by conducting a hazard analysis and design their products so that the most vulnerable segment of society is protected from needless harm. Those that don't should be held responsible."
